Antacid Syrup in Pregnancy – Safe Options and Precautions

by Health World 17 Jul 2025

During pregnancy, many women experience acidity, heartburn, and indigestion due to hormonal changes and pressure on the stomach caused by the growing uterus. In such cases, antacid syrup in pregnancy is often considered a quick and effective way to get relief. However, not all antacid syrups are safe for use during pregnancy, and proper medical guidance is necessary.

Antacid syrups work by neutralizing stomach acid and are generally safe when used as recommended. However, pregnant women should avoid formulations that contain aluminum, aspirin, or high levels of sodium, as these may pose risks to both the mother and baby.

Safe Antacid Syrup Options in Pregnancy:
Some commonly recommended and relatively safer syrups for pregnant women include:

  • Gaviscon Liquid – Forms a protective barrier and is often considered safe during pregnancy

  • Digene Gel (pregnancy-approved version) – Offers quick relief from acidity and gas

  • Polycrol Forte Suspension – May be used under medical supervision

  • Milk of Magnesia – Used for both acidity and mild constipation, but only on doctor’s advice

Important Precautions:

  • Always consult your doctor before using any antacid syrup

  • Avoid self-medication, especially in the first trimester

  • Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time

  • Drink plenty of water and follow a healthy pregnancy diet

  • Consider lifestyle changes like eating smaller meals and avoiding spicy or oily foods

Antacid syrups are effective, but medical consultation is essential to avoid any risk to mother or baby. Long-term or frequent use without guidance is not recommended.
